My experience in care

I started my career on the south coast in the NHS, in occupational therapy, working in hospitals and the community. I then moved to Local Authority as a social work practitioner, where I found my love of working with people living with dementia.

I became a Dementia Care Mapper and then developed my skills and knowledge whilst working as a registered care home manager in different care settings. The next decade was spent as an operations manager for a range of large operators, before moving up to the Midlands, where I launched my first successful care consultancy business.

I am proud to be Director of People for Care Leaders Consultancy, where I focus on coaching, mentoring, and understanding people – a core strength of mine. Alongside this role, I am also the Director of Care for a growing care provider that fully supports all that I do.

My hobbies and interests

My daughter and family live in Spain, my son and his fiancée live in New Zealand, and my brother lives in the USA. So international travel is very high on my non-working life agenda, which is not so bad! I also love baking, with a glass of wine in my hand and learning Spanish, which I have been doing for over ten years and still not much better than when I started. I give myself a yearly goal, and this year it is to learn the keyboard – hoping it won’t take as long as Spanish has!

What I love about working in the care sector

“To bring a magical moment to a person’s day by taking time with them is the reason I love doing this. This can be a resident smiling, a carer understanding what makes that resident smile, or a manager having the time and ability to make that moment happen. All priceless moments that I can play a part in changing.”
